The difference between water-cooled screw chillers and air-cooled screw chillers
In the field of modern industrial and commercial refrigeration, screw chillers are widely used as efficient refrigeration equipment. Among them, water-cooled screw chillers and air-cooled screw chillers are two common types, which have significant differences in many aspects, and these differences affect users' equipment selection in different scenarios.
Refrigeration principle and heat dissipation method
The refrigeration principle of the water-cooled screw chiller is based on the vapor compression refrigeration cycle. The refrigerant absorbs the heat of the cooled medium (usually water) in the evaporator, evaporates into a gaseous state, and is then compressed into a high-temperature and high-pressure gas by a compressor. The high-temperature and high-pressure refrigerant gas enters the condenser, where it transfers heat to the cooling water through heat exchange with the cooling water, condenses itself into a liquid state, and then returns to the evaporator after being depressurized by a throttling device, and the cycle repeats. Its heat dissipation mainly relies on the cooling water system, which dissipates heat into the atmosphere through the cooling tower.
Air-cooled screw chillers are also based on a vapor compression refrigeration cycle, but the heat dissipation method is different. After the refrigerant absorbs heat and evaporates in the evaporator, it is compressed into a high-temperature and high-pressure gas by the compressor and enters the air-cooled condenser. In the air-cooled condenser, the refrigerant dissipates heat to the surrounding air through heat exchange with the air. The gaseous refrigerant is cooled and condensed into liquid, and then returned to the evaporator after being reduced in pressure by the throttling device. Air-cooled units directly use air as a heat dissipation medium, without the need for an additional cooling water system.
Equipment structure and installation
The water-cooled screw chiller has a relatively complex structure because it needs to be equipped with a cooling water system. In addition to the main unit, it also includes auxiliary equipment such as cooling towers, cooling water pumps, and pipelines. The cooling tower is usually installed in a well-ventilated location outdoors, and the cooling water pump is used to drive the cooling water to circulate in the system. The installation of the entire system needs to consider issues such as pipeline layout, location selection of the cooling tower, and coordination with the building, and the installation project is relatively cumbersome.
The structure of air-cooled screw chiller is relatively simple. It integrates the main components such as compressor, condenser, evaporator, etc., and does not require additional cooling tower and complex cooling water pipe system. The unit can be directly installed in well-ventilated places such as outdoor ground or roof. The installation process is relatively convenient and the floor space is relatively small. It is more suitable for places with limited space.

Operating cost and energy efficiency ratio
In terms of operating costs, the energy consumption of water-cooled screw chillers mainly comes from the compressor, cooling water pump and cooling tower fan. Due to the existence of the cooling water system, the cooling water pump needs to run continuously to ensure the circulation of cooling water, which increases energy consumption to a certain extent. However, the condenser heat exchange efficiency of the water-cooled unit is relatively high. In the case of large-scale refrigeration demand and a stable water source, its energy efficiency ratio (COP) is relatively high, and the long-term operating cost may be low.
The energy consumption of air-cooled screw chillers is mainly concentrated in the compressor and condenser fan. Since the heat exchange efficiency of air is lower than that of water, the compressor of an air-cooled unit may need to consume more electricity to achieve the same cooling effect. Its energy efficiency ratio is usually lower than that of a water-cooled unit, especially in high temperature environments, the heat dissipation effect of the air-cooled condenser will be affected, resulting in reduced unit performance and increased operating costs.
Applicable scenarios
Water-cooled screw chillers are suitable for places with large cooling demand and stable water supply, such as large commercial buildings and industrial plants. For example, large shopping malls, hotels, factories, etc., these places can make full use of the advantages of high efficiency and energy saving of water-cooled units, dissipate a large amount of heat through cooling towers, and ensure the stable operation of the refrigeration system.
Air-cooled screw chillers are more suitable for small commercial places, areas with limited installation space or insufficient water sources, such as small supermarkets, offices, small processing plants, etc. Its easy installation and no need for water sources make it advantageous in these scenarios. In addition, in some places with high noise requirements, the noise of air-cooled units is relatively loud, and additional sound insulation measures may be required.
In summary, there are obvious differences between water-cooled screw chillers and air-cooled screw chillers in terms of refrigeration principle, heat dissipation method, equipment structure, operating cost and applicable scenarios. When choosing, users should consider their own refrigeration needs, installation conditions, operating cost budget and use environment to determine the appropriate refrigeration equipment.
