Introduction to the working principle of air-cooled screw chiller
As a common refrigeration equipment, air-cooled screw chillers play a key role in industrial production, commercial places and some civil buildings. It achieves the purpose of refrigeration and cooling by transferring low-temperature heat from one area to another through a series of complex and orderly thermodynamic processes. The following will explain its working principle in detail.
Air-cooled screw chillers are mainly composed of screw compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, control systems and other core components. These components work together to form a complete refrigeration cycle system.
The entire refrigeration cycle begins with a screw compressor. The compressor plays the role of the "heart" in the chiller, compressing low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant gas into high-temperature, high-pressure gas. The screw compressor works through a pair of intermeshing spiral rotors. During the rotation of the rotors, the volume between the teeth changes continuously, thereby achieving the suction, compression and discharge of the refrigerant gas. As the refrigerant gas is compressed, its temperature and pressure rise sharply, creating conditions for subsequent heat exchange.
The high-temperature and high-pressure refrigerant gas discharged from the compressor enters the condenser. The condenser is a key component for air-cooled screw chillers to achieve heat dissipation. In the condenser, the high-temperature and high-pressure refrigerant gas exchanges heat with the outside air. Air-cooled condensers usually adopt a finned tube structure, and the fan forces the outside air to blow over the surface of the finned tube to take away the heat in the refrigerant gas. In this process, the refrigerant gas gradually cools and condenses into a high-pressure liquid, and its pressure remains basically unchanged, but the temperature is greatly reduced. The heat is transferred from the refrigerant to the outside air, causing the ambient temperature to rise, completing the heat dissipation process in the refrigeration cycle.

After the high-pressure refrigerant liquid flows out of the condenser, it passes through the expansion valve and enters the evaporator. The expansion valve plays a role in throttling and reducing pressure here. It controls the flow of the refrigerant so that the pressure of the high-pressure refrigerant liquid is instantly reduced when it passes through the expansion valve, thereby partially gasifying and forming a low-temperature and low-pressure gas-liquid mixed refrigerant. The precise adjustment of the expansion valve is crucial to ensure the reasonable evaporation amount of the refrigerant in the evaporator and the stable operation of the entire refrigeration system.
After the low-temperature and low-pressure gas-liquid mixed refrigerant enters the evaporator, it begins to exchange heat with the medium to be cooled (usually water). In the evaporator, the refrigerant absorbs the heat in the water and gradually evaporates into a low-temperature and low-pressure gas. The cooled water temperature is reduced and transported to the area that needs to be refrigerated through a circulating water pump, such as the cooling process in industrial production, the air conditioning system in commercial buildings, etc., so as to achieve cooling of the target area. The low-temperature and low-pressure refrigerant gas generated in the evaporator is sucked into the screw compressor again, starting a new round of refrigeration cycle.
The control system plays an important role in coordinating and monitoring the operation of various components in the air-cooled screw chiller. It monitors the system's temperature, pressure, flow and other parameters in real time through sensors, and accurately controls the compressor speed, expansion valve opening, fan operation status, etc. according to the preset operating parameters and actual working conditions. For example, when the system detects that the temperature of the cooled medium rises, the control system will automatically increase the speed of the compressor and increase the circulation of the refrigerant, thereby enhancing the cooling effect; when the condenser temperature is too high, the control system will increase the fan speed to enhance heat dissipation. Through this intelligent control, the air-cooled screw chiller can dynamically adjust the operating status according to actual needs, ensuring the cooling effect while achieving efficient and energy-saving operation.
Air-cooled screw chillers achieve a continuous and stable refrigeration process through the coordinated work of screw compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, and control systems, using the physical changes of refrigerants and the principle of heat transfer. Its efficient and reliable working characteristics make it an ideal choice for refrigeration needs in many fields. With the continuous development of technology, air-cooled screw chillers will continue to optimize performance and energy saving, providing stronger support for the development of various industries.
